Crescendo's History
| Crescendo was founded in 2003 by
Christine Gevert, Music Director of
Trinity
Church in Lime Rock. For its early years, Crescendo
operated under the umbrella of Trinity Lime Rock, but within a few years the
organization had grown to the point where it was able to become a self-financing
organization, functioning on its own, had obtained IRS 501(c)(3) certification, and,
although it retains Trinity Lime Rock as a base of operations and concert venue,
became a fully independent entity. Crescendo's first concert was performed not by
local musicians but by a European group, the Badura-Skoda Trio, which performed
chamber music at a benefit concert at Weatherstone, a private residence in
nearby Sharon, CT.

workshops, held at Trinity Lime Rock. The instructors for these
included Christine Gevert, Janet Walker, mezzo-soprano and Soloist with
Opera Augsburg, Germany, and Monte Stone, baritone and music teacher at
the Hotchkiss School, Lakeville, CT.
The
lectures were: A brief
history of vocal music with examples of opera, lied, and oratorio;
Sacred choral music in the Renaissance; the oratorio and cantata in the
Baroque era; Mass composition until the Classical era; Antiphonal vocal
music - an introduction; Antiphonal vocal music - Claudio Monteverdi and
the Venetian School; Antiphonal vocal music - Heinrich Schütz and the
German school.
The
workshops: Introduction to
vocal technique; Music theory crash course; Score reading for the choir
singer; Sight reading and rhythm; Vocal techniques; Sight reading

On October 19, 2003, Crescendo
sponsored
its first concert, the music of the Badura-Skoda Trio, with Paul Badura-Skoda,
piano, Martin Kofler, flute, and Michael Carrera, violincello, at
Weatherstone, a private estate in Sharon, CT. The program
consisted of chamber music selected from the works of Hayden, Schubert,
and Martinu. |

2004 began with a series of four
workshops for
choral singers. With Christine Gevert as the instructor, the
topics were score reading, sight reading, sight-singing the melody, and
sight-singing (and writing) harmony. February 14 marked the debut
of the Crescendo
Vocal Ensemble, which presented a well-received program at out
Trinity Lime Rock venue entitled "Love, Human and Divine -- An Italian
Night on Valentine's Day". The composers were Grancini, Lasso,
Frescobaldi, Vecchi and Monteverdi, among others.
A month later, the
Crescendo
Baroque Ensemble made a double-headed debut. On March 27 they
both conducted a
workshop at the Congregational Church in Salisbury for experienced
players in chamber music performance. Later the same day, they
presented a concert of chamber music of the French, Italian and German
Baroque, on both period and modern instruments at Trinity Lime Rock.
The program consisted of sonatas, suites, trios and quartettes of music
by Graun, Boismortier, Vivaldi, Corelli, Quantz, Rameau, Sammartini, and
Telemann. Ensemble members for these activities included Rodrigo
Tarraza (traverso), Judith Dansker (oboe), Reinmar Seidler (cello), and
Christine Gevert (harpsichord).
The years concluded with performances
on November 13 and 14, at Trinity Lime Rock and the Church of Christ,
Congregational, in Norfolk of renaissance and
Baroque antiphonal music
for choir: Magnificats and Dixit by Gabrieli, Schütz, Kindermann, and
Vivaldi. This concert marked the debut of the
Crescendo Chorus, who
teamed with the Choir of the Norfolk Congregational Church (with
Elizabeth Allyn as conductor and organist), the Fanfare Brass Ensemble,
with Christine Gevert as conductor, harpsichordist, and organist.
This concert was co-sponsored by the Keleman Fund. |
| 2005 |
The year opened with a
Crescendo-sponsored concert held in the
Hotchkiss School
Chapel, by Peter Sykes,
harpsichord. The program consisted of the complete Goldberg
Variations by Johann Sebastian Bach. Christine Gevert provided
opening remarks. Two months later the
Crescendo Choir
collaborated with the
French Chamber Orchestra, of Senlis, France, led by Brian Suits and
Christine Gevert, with solo violinist Kyung Sun Lee. On that
program were works by Mozart, Ravel, Saint-Saens, Gershwin, and the
Vivaldi Gloria. Christine
Gevert lectured on Bach's
motets in August at Trinity Lime Rock. The following day, the
Crescendo Vocal
Ensemble, with Christine Gevert conducting and playing the
harpsichord, presented "Crescendo Sings at Music Mountain Summer
Festival" -- motets by Johann Sebastian Bach and works for harpsichord
by Johann Jakob Froberger -- in Gordon Hall at
Music Mountain,
Falls Village, CT. Later that month, at a benefit concert at a
private residence in Millerton, NY, the
Crescendo
Baroque Ensemble presented "Al Fresco" - baroque music for
countertenor, oboe, and harpsichord - with arias, cantatas, and trio
sonatas by J. S. Bach, Brevi, Capricornus, and Handel. For this
performance, the Baroque Ensemble included Randy Orzano (countertenor),
Judith Dansker (oboe), and Christine Gevert (harpsichord).
In October, Christine Gevert presented
a master class
for harpsichord at Trinity Lime Rock, followed the next day by a
concert, again at Trinity, by the
Crescendo
Baroque Ensemble entitled "Dolce Pur d'Amor l'Affano" (The Sweet
Agony of Love), consisting of treasures of the early and late Baroque:
arias, cantatas and sonatas from Brevi to Handel and Bach. The
Baroque Ensemble for this performance included Randy Orzano
(countertenor), Lisa Rautenberg (violin), Judith Dansker (oboe), and
Christine Gevert (harpsichord).
Two
lectures by Christine Gevert
for the Taconic Learning Center and held at Trinity Lime Rock came next.
The first was on Gloria by Antonio Vivaldi, and the second was on
Dave Brubeck's jazz Mass "To Hope - A Celebration."
The year ended with concerts at
Trinity Lime Rock and at Christ Church
Cathedral, Hartford by the
Crescendo Chorus and soloists, with organ and jazz ensemble,
conducted by Christine Gevert. The program included choral
masterworks of sacred Baroque and jazz, including excertps from
Vivaldi's Gloria, J. S. Bach/s Cantata BWV 147, and
Dave Brubeck's jazz Mass "To Hope
- a Celebration." |
| 2006 |
Crescendo began 2006 by sponsoring a
concert by the English vocal ensemble,
I Fagiolini, with
Robert Hollingworth, organist and director. The concert was held
on March 4 at Trinity Lime Rock, and consisted of a concert of Spanish,
Italian and Flemish Renaissance music, including works by Palestrina, Da
Flecha, Monteverdi, De Wert and others.
On March 25th and 26th, the
Crescendo Chorus and
soloists, with organ, brass, hand bells, and jazz ensemble, and
conducted by Christine Gevert, presented
Dave Brubeck's complete jazz Mass
"To Hope - A Celebration" at Trinity Lime Rock and at St. James
Church in Great Barrington.
The summer activities included a
series of eight workshops, held at Trinity Lime Rock and conducted by
Christine Gevert, for members of the
Crescendo Vocal
Ensemble -- all advanced singers -- addressing Renaissance, early
Baroque, and 20th century repertoire. Additionally, the Crescendo
Vocal Ensemble, conducted by Christine Gevert, who also played
harpsichord, performed at a benefit concert at a private residence in
Lakeville. The program, called "Bravura Baroque by the Lake (Al
Lago!)" included works by Banchieri, Luzzaschi, Kuhnau, and others.
The final event of 2006 was the
concert at Trinity Lime Rock and at St. James in Great Barrington of
Frank Martin's "Mass
for Double Chorus" and Ariel Ramirez' "Missa Criolla". The
Crescendo Chorus, soloists, and the Altiplanic ensemble "Alturas
Duo", with guests, were conducted by Christine Gevert. |
